Perhaps you’re looking for a family-friendly beach where you can swim, walk or play in the sand, or maybe you’re searching for that perfect wave. The Byron Bay region has a plentiful supply of picturesque beaches to spend a leisurely day at, all close to Bencluna. If you have time, we recommend experiencing them all.
BRUNSWICK HEADS BEACH
The town of Brunswick Heads is located at the mouth of the Brunswick River, and this creates a protected beach and river area ideal for swimming, fishing, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. Further out, you’ll find popular surfing breaks, and between May and October you may be lucky enough to spot migrating whales.
Wategos is a popular beach with Byron locals, known mostly for its right hand break. The waves are not overly strong or fast so they are well suited for longboarders. Wategos is patrolled in summer and you can swim close to shore, however finding parking can be a challenge during school holidays.
BROKEN HEAD BEACH
Broken Head Beach is located a few minutes away from the hustle of Byron Bay and surrounded by a national park reserve. You’ll find both families and surfers enjoying this shoreline, which is patrolled and has bathroom and barbecue facilities. Walk up the track to the headland for a magnificent view towards Cape Byron Lighthouse.
Pristine Belongil Beach offers something for everyone from its northern location. It’s popular with experienced and beginner surfers when the waves are right, and also provides the perfect walk to or from town. There are dog off leash areas and various parking areas. Belongil is an excellent swimming beach, however be aware of occasional rips.
